Questions and answers

What is the deadline for filing my income tax return?
Generally, you must file your income tax return no later than April 30 of the current year

Am I required to file an income tax return for a deceased person?
If you are the legal representative of a deceased person's estate, you may be required to file a final income tax return on their behalf. For more information, please consult the Canada Revenue Agency guide: this link.

When can I file my income tax return?
If you use IMPÔTEL or IMPÔNET software, you may submit your return beginning February 20. Paper income tax forms are generally available in early February. However, it is recommended that you wait until the end of the first week of March before filing, as employers and financial institutions have until the end of February to issue the required tax slips

What is a notice of assessment?
A Notice of Assessment is a document issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) after processing your income tax return. It confirms your tax assessment and indicates whether you are entitled to a refund or have a balance owing.
It also provides information such as your RRSP contribution room for the next taxation year, along with other important details regarding your tax account.
Revenu Québec also issues its own Notice of Assessment.

I am an international student. Am I required to file an income tax return?
You are generally required to file an income tax return if you earned employment or other taxable income in Canada.

Federal site
Provincial site

I provide care for an elderly person. Am I eligible for a tax credit?
Yes. You may be eligible for the Caregiver Tax Credit at both the federal and provincial levels. However, the eligibility requirements differ between the two governments

Federal site
Provincial site

I am missing some tax slips or information slips. What should I do?
If you are missing one or more tax slips, you should contact your employer or the issuer to request a replacement copy.
If you know in advance that you will not receive your tax slip before the filing deadline, include a note with your return explaining the situation. The note should include the payer's name and address, the type of income involved, and the steps you have taken to obtain the missing slip.
If necessary, you may use your final pay stub of the year to estimate your income and deductions.
If you file your return electronically, be sure to keep all supporting documents, as the tax authorities may request them at a later date.

My spouse and I receive Québec Pension Plan benefits and a federal pension. Can we split this income?
No. Public pension benefits, such as Québec Pension Plan (QPP) benefits, as well as withdrawals from an RRSP, are not eligible for pension income splitting. In addition, unlike the federal government, Québec does not take pension income splitting into account when calculating instalment payments.
